Effects of Technology on Your Unborn Baby

Today, there are a number of devices, appliances, types of technology which are sources of prenatal radiation exposure. Your lifestyle has a huge impact on your health, and so does technology. Some effects of technology on your unborn baby include medical exams, computerized axial tomography, scan of the abdomen or pelvis, X-rays and more. Unborn babies are more susceptible to the health effects of radiation, especially in the very early weeks immediately following conception. Mothers should be particularly cautious about radiation exposure.

How can radiation affect a foetus at its various gestational stages? The risk your unborn baby faces from radiation depends on his or her stage of development. The time during which a foetus develops inside the mother’s womb is vital for healthy growth. Radiation exposure before a baby’s birth may increase the likelihood of disease or cancers later in life, brain damage, and a wide range of birth defects or foetal death.

People are exposed to low-intensity radiation on a daily basis. Human-derived emitters such as airport security screeners, X-rays and other medical procedures, cell phones and nuclear weapons expose people to radiation. When one adds higher intensity radiation to their daily exposure, then the health concerns begin. Ionizing radiation is the most powerful form of radiation, can be used to produce electricity, treat cancer, take X-rays and sterilize medical instruments. Ionizing radiation is more worrisome and can cause health problems for unborn babies who come in contact with it.

What would cause a baby to be exposed to radiation? The most common source of prenatal radiation exposure is this medical exam: computerized axial tomography (CT scan or CAT). Unborn babies are more susceptible to the health effects of radiation, especially in the early weeks immediately following conception, since they are comprised of fewer cells that divide rapidly and therefore more likely to be disrupted by the effects of radiation. In turn, their development can be greatly impacted. Mothers should be particularly cautious about radiation exposure.

Other effects of utero-radiation exposure are impaired growth, physical deformities like smaller head size, irregular brain performance, or cancers that may develop later in the baby’s life. The risk your unborn baby faces from radiation depends on his or her stage of development.

Concern has been raised that repeated cycles of assisted reproductive technology may have a detrimental effect on future ovarian response and function, as well as pregnancy. A lot of pregnant women are occupied with massive amounts of Electromagnetic Radiations(EMR), produced by power lines, electrical appliances, wires in buildings, microwave radiation, WIFI, Cell phones that you hold near/on your ear for a long period of time, Cell phones that end up on your body when you fall asleep while holding or using it and so many other technologies.

You might not see, feel or realize this but it is happening every single moment when you are close to technology. According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), The Radio Frequency Fields emitted by mobile phones are 1000 times larger than what the base stations do. Such increased radiation emissions from handsets and tower-based antennas carry signals and are linked to genetic damage, brain tumours, stress, insomnia, headaches, infertility in men, and more. EMR exposure also damages fertility, endangers the male sperm and the healthy development of the embryo.

According to Authoritative Research, Pregnant women who use devices with high electromagnetic radiation often, with an increased amount of exposure to radiation, are more likely to give birth to children with behavioral problems, raise the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity, difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships.

The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection says that use of the phones by both pregnant women and children should be “limited”.

Electromagnetic fields produce biological stress and free radicals, which also make the unborn baby susceptible to congenital malformations, tissue and cell damages, disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability in the short term, and that longer-term hazards include depressive syndrome and degeneration of the nervous structures of the brain.

There’s more. Impaired growth, physical deformities like smaller head size, irregular brain performance, or cancers that may develop later in the baby’s life. The womb sometimes serves as a safe house of sorts for the baby. It can shield the baby from the total amount of radiation the mother is being exposed to, limiting the harm caused. Since unborn babies are sensitive to radiation, it’s best to postpone an examination that involves radiation exposure or replace with another until after the baby is born. Even so, the risk depends on the amount of radiation the unborn baby is exposed to.

If you’re pregnant and are at all concerned about the possibility of being exposed to radiation, consult your doctor immediately. Hope you learned a thing or two from this article. Till next time!
